Managing the Highs & Lows of Life
What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition that causes dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. Individuals with bipolar disorder experience periods of extreme mood changes, alternating between manic (or hypomanic) states of elevated mood and depressive states of intense sadness. These mood swings can affect a person’s ability to function in everyday life, impacting relationships, work, and general well-being.
What Are the Symptoms and Types of Bipolar Disorder?
Elevated Mood: Mania and Hypomania
Mania and hypomania are elevated mood states that differ in severity. Mania is more intense and can last for days or weeks, leading to risky behaviours like excessive spending, substance abuse, or dangerous driving. People experiencing mania may feel overly confident, speak rapidly, and have less need for sleep, which can lead to physical exhaustion. Hypomania is a milder version of mania, with similar symptoms such as increased energy and optimism, but without significant disruption to daily life.
Low Mood: Depressive Episodes
Depression is characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or a loss of interest in activities that once brought pleasure. People may struggle with concentration, decision-making, and completing everyday tasks. Physically, common symptoms include changes in sleep patterns, appetite, fatigue, and aches, as well as potential weight gain or loss. In severe cases, thoughts of self-harm or suicide may arise, requiring immediate professional support
Types of Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder comes in several forms, each marked by mood swings between high energy and low mood. Bipolar I Disorder involves severe manic episodes that last at least a week or require hospitalisation, alongside deep depressive episodes. Bipolar II Disorder features milder high-energy episodes (hypomania) and more frequent, intense depressive episodes that disrupt daily life. Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia) includes ongoing, less extreme mood swings that last for at least two years, with periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms, though they don’t meet the full criteria for mania or major depression. Treatment for all types typically involves a combination of medication and therapy to manage symptoms and stabilise mood.
