Finding Light in the Darkness
What is Depression?
Depression, also known as major depressive disorder (MDD), is a common yet serious mental health condition that affects a person’s mood, thoughts, feelings, and overall functioning. It is not just a temporary feeling of sadness or “feeling down”; depression is a persistent condition that can interfere with daily life, affecting work, relationships, and overall well-being.
While everyone feels sad or low at times, depression involves ongoing feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, and loss of interest in activities that are typically enjoyable. Left untreated, depression can lead to a range of emotional, physical, and psychological problems.
What Are the Symptoms and Types of Depression?
Depression symptoms can vary, but common signs include persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or irritability, and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Cognitive symptoms may involve difficulty concentrating, negative thoughts, and a pessimistic view of the future. Physical symptoms can include changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and unexplained aches. Behaviourally, individuals may withdraw from social activities, experience reduced productivity, or neglect personal care. In severe cases, thoughts of death or suicide may occur.
There are a few common types of depression:
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is the most common form of depression, characterised by persistent low mood and other symptoms lasting at least two weeks, significantly affecting daily functioning.
Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia) is a chronic form of depression with symptoms lasting at least two years, though less severe than MDD, it still impacts quality of life. Bipolar Disorder involves alternating episodes of depression and mania or hypomania, with depressive episodes resembling MDD.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) occurs during the colder months, causing fatigue, weight gain, and sadness.
Postpartum Depression affects some women after childbirth, triggered by hormonal changes and the stress of new motherhood, with symptoms similar to MDD.
