Understanding Personality Disorders

Personality disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterised by enduring patterns of behaviour, cognition, and inner experience that deviate significantly from the expectations of the individual’s culture. These patterns are pervasive, inflexible, and typically cause distress or impairment in various aspects of life, including work, relationships, and self-functioning.

Personality disorders can manifest in many different ways, often leading to difficulties in emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and managing everyday stressors. These conditions can be challenging for both the individuals experiencing them and the people around them.

Types of Personality Disorders

There are several different types of personality disorders, each with its own distinctive patterns of thought and behaviour. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) categorises personality disorders into three clusters based on common characteristics:

Cluster A: Odd or Eccentric Disorders

These disorders are characterised by unusual or eccentric thinking and behaviour.

• Paranoid Personality Disorder: A pervasive distrust and suspicion of others, often believing that others are plotting against them or have malicious intent.• Schizoid Personality Disorder: A tendency to avoid close relationships and a lack of interest in social interactions.• Schizotypal Personality Disorder: Behaviour that is odd or eccentric, such as peculiar beliefs or unusual perceptions, often resembling early signs of schizophrenia.

Cluster B: Dramatic, Emotional, or Erratic Disorders

These disorders are characterised by intense emotions, impulsivity, and difficulty managing relationships.

• Antisocial Personality Disorder: A pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others, often characterised by deceitfulness, impulsivity, and lack of empathy.

• Borderline Personality Disorder: A pervasive pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and emotions. People with BPD may experience intense mood swings, fear of abandonment, and difficulty maintaining stable relationships.

• Histrionic Personality Disorder: A pattern of excessive emotionality and attention-seeking behaviour. Individuals may feel uncomfortable when not the centre of attention and may use dramatic expressions of emotion to draw attention.

• Narcissistic Personality Disorder: A grandiose sense of self-importance, a need for excessive admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. Individuals may have difficulty recognising the needs and feelings of others.

Cluster C: Anxious or Fearful Disorders

These disorders are characterised by anxiety, fear, and avoidance.

• Avoidant Personality Disorder: A pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and sensitivity to negative evaluation. People with this disorder may avoid social interactions due to fear of criticism or rejection.

• Dependent Personality Disorder: A pervasive and excessive need to be taken care of, leading to submissive and clinging behaviours. Individuals may struggle with making decisions independently or assertively.

• Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: A preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control. Unlike obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which involves intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, OCPD is characterised by an extreme desire for control and rigid standards.
