Working with Anxiety,

Trauma or Grief

By Dr George Baldwin, Clinical Psychologist at Nafs Health – Available in Bury St Edmunds and Online

Many of the individuals, couples, and families I work with come to therapy carrying something heavy such as anxiety that feels hard to shake, a painful experience from the past, or the deep pain of grief. If you’re living with any of these, I want to begin by saying this: you’re not alone and support is available.

As a Clinical Psychologist, I work with clients across the lifespan, helping them understand and manage the emotional impact of life’s most difficult experiences. Whether we meet in person here at Nafs Health in Bury St Edmunds or virtually, therapy is a space where your thoughts and feelings can be met with care, curiosity and evidence-based strategies for healing.

Understanding the Experience

Anxiety can show up in many ways - constant worry, racing thoughts, physical tension, difficulty sleeping, or panic attacks. It might be linked to a specific situation, or it might feel like it’s always been there in the background. Therapy can help you understand where the anxiety comes from and, importantly, how to shift your relationship with it.

Trauma can result from a single overwhelming event or a series of distressing experiences over time. You might feel on edge, stuck in the past, or disconnected from yourself or others. Trauma-focused therapy offers a structured, compassionate approach to processing these experiences in a way that feels safe and manageable.

Grief, whether following the death of a loved one, the loss of a relationship, or another major life change, can be complex and deeply personal. There’s no “right” way to grieve, but therapy can provide a space to express what’s often hard to put into words and to begin finding a path forward.

How I Work

In our sessions, we’ll take time to understand your experiences in depth—what you’re feeling, what’s helped or hindered in the past, and what goals you may have for your mental health and wellbeing. I draw on both Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Systemic Therapy, which means I can work with individuals, couples, or families depending on what best suits your situation.

We might explore:

• Current triggers and patterns

• Past experiences that still affect you

• Coping strategies - both those that help and unhelpful ones that may be keeping you stuck

• Strengths and resources you already have, even if they feel out of reach right now

Therapy is always tailored to you. Sometimes we focus on practical skills to manage distress day-to-day. Other times, we may gently explore deeper emotional wounds to support longer-term healing.

A Safe Place to Begin Again

Whether you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed by past trauma, or lost in grief, therapy is not about “fixing” you - because you are not broken. It’s about making space for what you’re going through, understanding it together, and building a way forward that feels more manageable and hopeful.
